"Short block replaced"

The Carfax says the short block was replaced at 71K miles but is clean otherwise. Which way do you run? Car is an Accord (obvs) with a V6 and manual transmission.

Well, it was replaced at a Honda dealer... so there’s that. Hopefully sourced FROM Honda.

It’s the closest and the lowest mileage V6 manual Accord on cars.com.

Not saying I’m buying it or that it’s a good idea, but that’s why I was looking at this particular one.

Was there an issue with these engines? I know that some Civics from the same era has issues with the block cracking, so they extended the warranty and replaced quite a few of them. But I’m not sure whether this applies to that Accord.

And if you’re patient, a better car will come along. If not, then you could still buy something like a beater Grand Marquis for next to nothing, be patient, get a better deal, and recoup your original money selling the Grand Marquis.

The Oppo answer is that if you’re really set on a FWD car, buy an MR2 and drive it in reverse.

But the better option is to widen your scope. Pick 5-10 cars that you want, and the options expand accordingly.

Can’t even remember how many times I’ve been burned by “getting a good deal” and “had to buy something” versus taking emotions and irrational preferences out of it.

My $0.02, there’s no way an owner screws up so badly that a short block replacement is needed, in a Honda Accord, at 71,000 miles, without creating great handfuls of other sleeper problems that are about to surface. An abusive owner already extracted all the value out of that car. It’s LeMons material. Better to wait and save, if you can afford the time.

Yeah, not that desperate for a car. Thought it was amusing that such an innocuous line wouldn’t mean much to someone who didn’t know much about cars, but here we know better.

I just hit google to see what you mean and ... geez.

Although I read it was mostly Honda V6s between ‘98-03 ... which means that there’s a higher probability that it was user error on this car.

And there is a chance that there was a manufacturing defect and the owner just had bad luck. But why take on that risk unless you’re getting a killer deal, at which point, what does the seller know that you don’t that justifies a killer deal?

Agreed on the risk. And that’s far from a killer deal .. 11K makes it the highest priced car of it’s kind on cars.com, and it’s past the highest price recommended by any pricing site I’ve seen.

The way I see it that whole service history makes the car more valuable. Short block included. Especially considering it was done long enough ago that any negative side effects causes by having that work performed would have already manifested if ever they were going to.

As someone who is currently dealing with a warranty issue on my Subaru Outback, I would imagine the previous owner was just happy to dump the car. It seems that these types of thing drive the current owner nuts and end up being a boon to the next owner because they basically get a new engine.

My mom’s outback is absolutely babied and just had the h6 replaced right at 50k because the dealer could not figure out why it was burning a quart of oil every 2k miles. I would take hers over any other used outback with the same miles.(I know about the whole suby burning oil fiasco but that was only suppose to be h4 engines)
